‘70 Years Later’: Read the latest issue of Heart to Heart magazine

Mike Scott, mscott@stph.org

If there’s something people love here in South Louisiana, it is a good reason to celebrate – and we have a dandy coming up here at St. Tammany Health System.

As you may have already heard, on Dec. 1 we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the health system, and we are already hard at work making sure that milestone is greeted with all due splendor.

As part of those preparations, we have been working since last September on a 70-part history series we are calling “70 for 70” and which highlights a different artifact every week that helps tell the St. Tammany Health System story.

One of our favorites is the photo gracing the cover of the latest issue of our quarterly Heart to Heart magazine. It shows some of our first nurses, including Emma M. Porche Wetherbee, who appears front and center.

Initially, we were not sure of the names of the women in that photo. Then we published it online, prompting local resident Rebecca Mohr Carter to write in not only to provide us with the name of the woman she knew as “Great Aunt Emmy” but also to share a brief but charming biography of her.

To me, it feels only fitting that members of our community are helping us tell the story of a hospital founded decades ago to care for that very same community.

You can read more about Aunt Emmy and other installments in our 70 for 70 series in this issue, which also contains an assortment of other stories that further speak to our commitment to the community we proudly call home.

Among them:

  • Chef Osman Rodas of Pardo’s shares his Pecan Pesto Chicken Breast recipe as part of our ongoing Healthier Northshore cooking demonstration series.
  • Our St. Tammany Pediatrics practice has opened new clinic in Mandeville, with an Express Care Kids walk-in and afterhours clinic located inside.
  • The nonprofit St. Tammany Hospital Foundation recently unveiled a new name, new logo and a renewed mission.
  • In addition to providing primary care for the whole family, our new North Covington clinic is also helping train next generation of family medicine specialists.
  • And more!

You can watch for your issue to arrive in your mailbox in the next coming days. If you just can’t wait, you can also find a digital version above or in our online newsroom. You can also just swing by our flagship St. Tammany Hospital in Covington or one of our clinics throughout the community and pick up a complimentary copy.

We are sure you will enjoy reading about our team’s steadfast dedication to you, our Northshore friends, families and neighbors – and thank you, as always, for trusting St. Tammany Health System with your family’s healthcare needs.
